Start With What You Are Actually Trying to Solve
Sustainability in textiles spans several distinct issues: water usage, chemical dyes, fibre biodegradability, labour conditions, and transport emissions. A fabric can be strong on one dimension and weak on another. Before asking a supplier for “sustainable fabric,” get specific about which of these matters most for your brand and your customers.
Organic and Undyed Cotton
Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilisers, reducing the environmental load of cultivation. Undyed or low-impact dyed cotton goes a step further by cutting water and chemical use in the finishing process. Both typically cost more per metre than conventional cotton, and that cost difference is usually justified by the reduced environmental footprint, not just marketing positioning.
Look for GOTS-Aligned Sourcing
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is one of the most recognised certifications for organic textiles, covering both environmental and social criteria across the supply chain. Ask your supplier directly whether a fabric is GOTS-certified or GOTS-aligned (produced to similar standards without full certification), since certification carries real cost and not every ethical supplier has completed the certification process.
Natural Fibres Are Not Automatically Sustainable
Cotton, linen, and silk are biodegradable, but conventional cultivation and processing can still be water- and chemical-intensive. Linen generally has a lighter environmental footprint than cotton since flax requires less water and fewer pesticides. If sustainability is central to your brand story, ask about the specific cultivation and processing method, not just the fibre type.
A Practical Checklist for Buyers
- Ask what specifically makes a fabric sustainable: fibre, dye process, water usage, or certification
- Request documentation for any certification claims (GOTS, OEKO-TEX, or similar)
- Compare the sustainable option against your standard fabric on price, MOQ, and lead time before committing your collection to it
- Be wary of vague claims like “eco-friendly” with no specific standard attached
