If you are launching or scaling a fashion label, sourcing the right fabric is one of the most consequential decisions you will make, and one of the easiest to get wrong. Here is a practical guide to sourcing wholesale fabric without the trial and error.
1. Start With Your Design Brief, Not the Catalogue
The biggest mistake new brands make is browsing a fabric catalogue before finalising their design intent. Instead, start with your garment: What drape do you need? Will it be worn in summer or winter? Does it need to hold structure (like a blazer) or flow (like a dress)? Answering these questions first narrows your fabric search dramatically and saves you from ordering swatches you will never use.
2. Understand GSM Before You Order
GSM (grams per square metre) tells you how heavy and dense a fabric is. Lightweight fabrics (under 120 GSM) suit summer wear and linings. Mid-weight fabrics (120 to 250 GSM) work for shirting, dresses and everyday wear. Heavier fabrics (250 GSM and above) suit structured garments like jackets and upholstery-adjacent pieces. If a supplier cannot tell you the GSM of a fabric on request, that is a red flag.
3. Always Request a Physical Swatch
Screen colours never match fabric in hand. A proper swatch also lets you test drape, check for colour bleeding, and confirm the fabric feels the way your target customer expects. A reliable supplier should be able to get a labelled swatch to you within a few days.
4. Ask About MOQ Early
Minimum order quantity (MOQ) varies significantly between wholesale fabric suppliers, from small-batch runs of 15 to 20 metres to bulk-only minimums of 100 metres or more. If you are testing a new design before committing to production, look specifically for suppliers who offer small-batch or private label options.
5. Confirm GST and Invoicing Upfront
For any registered business, GST-compliant invoicing is non-negotiable if you want to claim input tax credit. Confirm this before placing your first order, not after.
